Sportsmanship

Now this is an interesting article. A grossly lopsided victory in a Texas private high school girls basketball game has garnered some attention. The winning team is seeking to make it right, but at some point I thought the article was a little too harsh to the victors. My opinion. Any thoughts? Oh, by the way, the coach of the winning team never makes a comment. I did find that odd. Here's the link:

i have mixed feelings about this. i think the athletic association not having some sort of mercy rule in effect was a big contributor to this. i'm trying to imagine how i'd feel if i was on the losing team and the other team suddenly just started missing shots on purpose, or throwing the ball out of bounds intentionally or standing there and letting me drive for an uncontested layup... quite frankly, i'd have been pretty p----d off if they'd done it to me. i think that would have made my team look even worse.

i don't put much stock in the complaint about the 3 pointers. i mean, what would have been easier to score off of... threes or layups? i don't know what the game plan was, but pulling up for the trey is a lower percentage shot than driving in for a layup. that may very well have been their strategy for keeping the score down.

now, the behavior of any fans or coaches that cheered wildly after the game was well out of hand, that's very troubling to me. and if the coaches told their players to continue to run up the score, that's as bad or worse... especially at a Christian school.

i think the girls were in a no-win situation.

an addendum to my previous comment... i do realize that the article mentioned a "layup drill" so obviously they weren't shooting all threes. in the end, i think a mercy rule would have kept either team from looking bad. but at least dallas academy got a free NBA game from the owner's luxury suite for their troubles. they wouldn't have gotten that from a 100-68 score!
